Hot Water Extraction vs Dry Carpet Cleaning: Which Do You Need?
Two methods, different jobs. What each actually does, when dry cleaning is right, and why heat and suction decide the result.

What hot water extraction actually does
Hot water extraction — the process almost everyone calls steam cleaning, though no steam is involved — injects heated cleaning solution into the carpet under pressure and vacuums it straight back out in the same pass. The heat breaks the bond between soil and fibre; the suction removes the soil, the solution, and any detergent residue left from previous cleanings.
It is the method carpet manufacturers specify in their warranty documents, and it is the only common method that reaches the base of the pile rather than working on the top third of it. For fitted synthetic carpet in a normal household, it is what you want.
What low-moisture and dry methods do
Low-moisture methods — encapsulation, bonnet cleaning, dry compound — work differently. Encapsulation applies a polymer that crystallises around soil particles so they can be vacuumed away afterward. Dry compound spreads an absorbent carrier that is worked into the pile and removed with a vacuum. Bonnet cleaning uses an absorbent pad on a rotary machine to lift soil from the surface.
These have genuine uses. They dry in under an hour, which matters in a commercial space that cannot close. They are gentler on fibres that react badly to water. And for maintenance between deep cleanings on a commercial floor, encapsulation is a sensible programme.
What they do not do is remove deep soil. They work the upper portion of the pile. Run them exclusively for years and soil accumulates at the base where nothing reaches it, and eventually the carpet looks dull no matter how recently it was cleaned.

Heat is the variable people underestimate
The difference between a good extraction and a disappointing one is usually temperature. Body oils, cooking grease, and the airborne residue of ordinary living form a film that binds soil to fibre. Below a certain temperature that film does not break down, and the machine is effectively rinsing.
This is why rental units from the supermarket produce mediocre results. They heat water to roughly household tap temperature. Truck-mounted equipment sustains temperatures a portable cannot approach, and that single difference explains most of the gap in outcome.

Suction is the other half, and it decides dry time
Heat without recovery just leaves a wet carpet. Vacuum capacity determines how much of what went down comes back up, and that governs both how clean the carpet ends up and how long it stays damp.
Truck-mounted vacuum runs off the vehicle rather than a household outlet, which is why a properly extracted carpet is dry in two to four hours rather than a day or more. A carpet still damp the following morning was under-extracted, and damp padding in a humid Nassau summer develops odour before it dries.

When we choose the gentler method
Wool and wool-blend broadloom, silk, some antique rugs, and certain older backings do not tolerate the heat and volume that synthetic carpet shrugs off. Wool can shrink; some dyes bleed; older backings can delaminate. On those we use cooler water, pH-balanced solution matched to the fibre, and considerably less moisture — and we test for colourfastness before anything else happens.
Fitted carpet in Garden City's older homes is a common example. A house from the 1920s may well have wool broadloom that a standard synthetic-carpet process would damage, and identifying the fibre before starting is not a formality.

The short version
Synthetic fitted carpet in a house: hot water extraction, every time. Commercial floor needing maintenance between deep cleans, or a space that cannot be out of use: low-moisture has a real place. Wool, silk, or anything hand-made: a gentler process chosen after testing.
Anyone who offers you one method for every situation is selling their equipment rather than solving your problem.
What to ask before booking anyone
Ask whether the equipment is truck-mounted or portable. It is a factual question with a factual answer, and it predicts dry time better than anything else you could ask. A portable unit in a van is not the same thing as a truck-mount, and some companies are deliberately vague about the distinction.
Ask what temperature the solution reaches, and what the process is for wool. A company that cannot answer the second question should not be cleaning wool. Ask whether the price includes pre-treatment or whether that is extra, because a quote that excludes it is not comparable to one that includes it.
And ask what happens if you are not satisfied. The answer tells you more about the company than the specification of the machine does.

Why the same method produces different results
Two companies with identical equipment routinely produce different outcomes, because method is only part of it. Pre-treatment and dwell time matter enormously — solution needs time to break down soil before extraction, and an operator working quickly skips that.
Pass discipline matters too. A wet pass followed by two or three dry passes recovers substantially more solution than a single pass, and it is the dry passes that determine both cleanliness and dry time. They are also the ones most often cut when someone is rushing to the next job.
This is why we quote a realistic time rather than a fast one. A living room, hall and stairs done properly takes longer than the same rooms done quickly, and the difference is visible two days later rather than on the day.
