Leather is skin, and it dries
Every cleaning removes some of the oils that keep leather supple. Cleaning without conditioning afterward is how a sofa ends up stiff and cracked along the seat and arm creases a year later. The two steps are not optional halves.
Finish type changes everything
Pigmented leather has a protective topcoat and tolerates cleaning well. Aniline and semi-aniline leathers are dyed through with little or no coating, absorb liquid instantly, and stain permanently from the wrong product. We identify which you have first.
Body oil is the usual culprit
The dark patches on headrests and armrests are absorbed body oil, not surface dirt, and household wipes push it deeper. Removing it takes a product formulated to lift oil out of the finish rather than smear it around.
What conditioning does not do
Conditioner restores flexibility. It does not repair cracking, refill a scratch, or bring back color that has already worn through. Recoloring is a separate repair and we will tell you when that is what you actually need.
What leather cleaning costs
Leather is priced per piece, like fabric upholstery, but the conditioning step is included rather than optional — cleaning leather without conditioning it afterward shortens its life, so we don't sell them separately.
Finish type affects the quote. Pigmented leather with a protective topcoat is straightforward. Aniline and semi-aniline leathers absorb everything and need slower, more careful work, which costs more. Recoloring and repair of cracked or worn-through leather is a different trade and priced separately.
We quote leather cleaning the same way everywhere in the county, whether the job is in Valley Stream, Freeport or Levittown. If a nearby service is a better fit for what you are describing, we will say so — drapes & curtain cleaning is the one people most often turn out to need instead.
How leather gets damaged
Household all-purpose cleaners and baby wipes are the most common culprits. Most contain alcohol or degreasers that strip the finish, and on aniline leather they leave a permanent lightened patch. The damage usually looks fine for a week and then becomes obvious as the surrounding leather continues to age and the treated area does not.
Cleaning without conditioning is the slower failure. Every clean removes some of the oils that keep the hide flexible, and skipping the conditioning step leaves the leather progressively drier until the seat and arm creases crack. Those cracks are permanent — conditioning afterward prevents further ones but does not close the ones already there.
Denim transfer is the damage people notice last and complain about most. Indigo from dark jeans migrates into light-coloured leather over months of ordinary sitting, and by the time it's obvious it has penetrated the finish rather than sitting on top of it. Early it often lifts; once it's set into a semi-aniline hide it may only lighten. Catching it early is worth far more than any product.
Keeping leather in condition
Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators. Heat and UV are what dry leather out, and a sofa with one end in a sunny window will crack on that end years before the other. If the layout can't change, rotate the cushions.
Wipe spills straight away with a dry cloth, and don't reach for a household cleaner. Water alone is usually enough for a fresh spill on pigmented leather, while anything containing alcohol or solvent risks the finish. On aniline leather, blot only — even water can leave a ring once it dries.
What happens on the day
Four steps, and you know the price before step three.
Identify the finish
Pigmented, semi-aniline or aniline — they absorb completely differently and the wrong product stains permanently.
Test a hidden panel
Always, before anything touches a visible surface.
Clean the oils out
Body oil in headrests and armrests gets lifted out of the finish rather than pushed deeper.
Condition
Every clean is followed by conditioning, because cleaning alone dries leather and dry leather cracks.

Leather Cleaning questions
Will you use anything that darkens the leather?
No. We test on a hidden area before treating visible surfaces.
Can you fix cat scratches?
Cleaning won't. Minor surface scuffs sometimes improve with conditioning; deep scratches need repair.
How often should leather be conditioned?
Every six to twelve months depending on sun exposure and use.
Why are the headrests darker than the rest?
That's absorbed body oil rather than surface dirt, which is why household wipes don't shift it — they push it deeper. It needs a product formulated to lift oil out of the finish.
Can conditioning fix cracked leather?
No. Conditioning restores flexibility and prevents further cracking, but cracks already there need repair or recoloring, which is a separate trade.
