W, S, WS or X: What the Tag on Your Sofa Actually Means

Where the tag is and why it exists

Almost every piece of upholstered furniture manufactured in the last forty years carries a cleaning code, usually on a tag under a seat cushion, beneath the frame, or stitched into the deck under the cushions. It is there because upholstery fabrics react so differently to water that the manufacturer needed a way to warn cleaners in advance.

The code is not advice. It is a specification, and ignoring it produces damage that no subsequent cleaning fixes. If you take one thing from this article, it is to find the tag before anyone applies anything to your furniture.

W — water-based cleaning is safe

The most common code and the most forgiving. W fabrics tolerate water-based solution, which means conventional low-moisture extraction is appropriate and most household spills can be blotted with water without leaving a mark.

Most modern synthetic upholstery falls here — polyester, microfibre, olefin blends. It does not mean the fabric is indestructible; over-wetting still causes problems because cushion foam holds water stubbornly and has no easy route to release it. But the chemistry is straightforward.

S — solvent only, and this is where sofas get ruined

S fabrics must be cleaned with a dry solvent. Water leaves a permanent ring at the boundary of every wet area, because the fabric's finish or dye reacts to water in a way that shows as a hard line once dry.

This is the single most common way a sofa is destroyed at home. Someone spills something, reaches for a damp cloth and a supermarket spot cleaner, and creates a water mark considerably more visible than the original spill. Rayon, viscose, acetate, silk and many decorative fabrics are S-coded.

The rule with an S fabric is simple: if you have not confirmed the product is solvent-based, do nothing except blot dry and call someone.

WS — either method, and X — neither

WS fabrics tolerate both approaches, which gives a professional latitude to choose based on the soil type. Oily soil responds better to solvent; water-based staining to water-based solution. Having both available is genuinely useful.

X is the restrictive one. X-coded fabrics must be vacuumed or brushed only — no water, no solvent. These are typically delicate weaves or fabrics whose finish would be disturbed by any liquid at all. There is no cleaning method for an X fabric beyond dry removal of surface soil, and anyone telling you otherwise is about to damage it.

What to do when the tag is missing

Tags get cut off, fall off, or were never there on older or imported furniture. In that case testing replaces reading.

The test is done in a genuinely hidden place — the underside of the deck, the back of a skirt, the inside of a removable cushion cover. A small amount of the intended solution is applied, worked gently, and blotted with a white cloth. What you are looking for is colour transferring to the cloth, any change in the fabric's texture, or a visible ring forming as it dries.

If any of those happen, the method changes. If nothing happens, it is reasonable to proceed on the visible areas. This takes a few minutes and it is the difference between a clean sofa and an expensive mistake.

Why upholstery is a different job from carpet

Carpet sits on padding over a subfloor, which gives extracted moisture somewhere to go and gives the operator margin for error. Upholstery has cushion foam, which holds water tenaciously and dries slowly from the inside out.

That is why upholstery work uses smaller tools, slower passes, and deliberately less moisture. A sofa saturated during cleaning can stay damp internally for days and develop odour or mildew in the foam — a problem considerably worse than the soiling that prompted the cleaning.

It is also why upholstery is priced by the piece rather than by area. A three-seat sofa with removable cushions cleaned on both sides is a different amount of work from a fixed-back loveseat, and square footage does not capture that.

Leather is not upholstery for these purposes

Leather does not get wet-cleaned at all. It is cleaned with products formulated for the finish type and then conditioned, because cleaning removes some of the oils that keep the hide flexible and skipping the conditioning step leaves it progressively drier until it cracks.

Sectionals that combine leather and fabric — increasingly common — need both processes on the same piece, and the boundary between them needs care. We treat each material to its own requirements rather than compromising on one method for the whole sofa.

Practical maintenance between cleanings

Vacuum upholstery on the same schedule as the floor. Furniture accumulates skin cells, body oils and dust at a rate comparable to carpet and almost nobody vacuums it, which is why arms and headrests darken years before the rest of the piece.

Rotate and flip removable cushions so wear distributes. Deal with spills by blotting immediately rather than rubbing, because rubbing drives liquid into the foam and distorts the weave.

And keep upholstery out of direct sun where the layout allows. UV fades and weakens fabric, and a sofa with one end in a sunny window will fail on that end years before the other.
