Wool or Synthetic? How to Tell, and Why It Changes Everything
The wrong method on wool causes shrinkage, dulling and dye bleed. A simple test, and what each fibre needs.

Why it matters before anyone touches the carpet
Wool and synthetic carpet look similar to most people and behave completely differently under cleaning. Wool can shrink. Its dyes are more likely to bleed. High-alkaline detergent strips the natural lanolin that gives the fibre its resilience and sheen, leaving it dry, brittle and permanently dull.
None of that is reversible. A synthetic carpet cleaned with wool-appropriate chemistry is merely cleaned conservatively. A wool carpet cleaned with synthetic-appropriate chemistry can be ruined in an afternoon.
The burn test, and how to do it safely
Take a few fibres from an inconspicuous area — inside a closet, under a piece of furniture, from the edge beneath the tack strip. Hold them with tweezers and touch a flame to them over a non-flammable surface.
Wool self-extinguishes when the flame is removed, smells like burning hair, and leaves a brittle black ash that crushes to powder. Nylon and polyester melt rather than burn, smell chemical or faintly sweet, and leave a hard bead that does not crush. Polypropylene melts readily and leaves a waxy bead.

The clues before you get that far
Age is the strongest signal. Wall-to-wall wool broadloom was common through the 1920s to 1960s and became progressively rarer after synthetics took over. A house in Roslyn's historic district or Garden City's estate section with original carpet is a serious wool candidate; a 1970s split-level almost certainly is not.
Feel and appearance help. Wool has a slightly springy resilience — press it and it recovers more readily than synthetic of similar age. It tends toward a matte finish where nylon carries more sheen. And wool sheds fine fibres for its whole life, which is why a wool carpet fills a vacuum faster than expected.
Price is another indicator. Wool is expensive. If the house is otherwise finished to a high standard and the carpet is decades old, the odds go up.

What wool needs
Cooler water, pH-balanced solution in the neutral to slightly acidic range, and considerably less moisture than synthetic tolerates. Colourfastness testing on every colour present, because wool dyes vary enormously and a red field bleeding into an ivory border cannot be undone.
Drying matters more too. Wool holds moisture longer than synthetic, so airflow after cleaning is not optional. A wool carpet left damp under furniture develops problems synthetic would shrug off.

What synthetic needs
Nylon takes hot water extraction well and recovers its appearance readily. Polyester is stain-resistant but oleophilic — it holds oily soil more stubbornly than nylon, so traffic lanes in polyester need more pre-treatment. Polypropylene resists water-based staining almost entirely and struggles with oil.
All three tolerate heat and volume that wool does not, which is why identifying the fibre changes the method rather than merely the price.
When you genuinely cannot tell
Blends exist, and a wool-nylon blend behaves closer to wool than to nylon for cleaning purposes. Some older carpet has a wool face on a synthetic backing. And some rugs have wool in the pile and cotton in the foundation, each with different tolerances.
The safe default is to treat an unknown as wool until proven otherwise. Cleaning conservatively costs a little performance; cleaning aggressively on the wrong fibre costs the carpet.

Wool's advantages, since they explain the care
Wool is not simply the expensive option. It resists soiling better than synthetic because the fibre's structure and its natural lanolin repel water-based staining. It recovers from compression better, which is why wool carpet in a well-kept house can look presentable after decades. It is naturally flame-resistant, and it buffers humidity by absorbing and releasing moisture.
Every one of those properties depends on the lanolin remaining in the fibre. High-alkaline detergent strips it, and once stripped it does not come back. That is the entire reason wool needs different chemistry — not fragility for its own sake, but preserving the thing that makes wool worth having.
What goes wrong, in order of how often we see it
Dulling is the most common. A wool carpet cleaned with the wrong product loses its sheen and never regains it. The homeowner usually assumes the carpet is simply old.
Shrinkage is the most expensive. Wool cleaned too wet and too hot can pull away from the tack strip, and the fix is a professional stretch and re-lay rather than anything cleaning-related. In older houses around Roslyn and Garden City that has meant lifting carpet that had been down for forty years without incident.
Dye bleed is the least recoverable. Once a colour has migrated into an adjacent lighter area, some cases can be partially corrected by a specialist and many cannot. It takes one careless application, which is why testing every colour present takes precedence over getting started.

Rugs follow the same rules, with higher stakes
Everything above applies to area rugs, only more so, because a rug is likely to be worth considerably more than the equivalent area of fitted carpet and is far more likely to be wool or silk.
A hand-knotted rug has its own additional considerations — the foundation may be cotton while the pile is wool, the fringe is structural rather than decorative, and dye stability varies by origin, age and colour within the same piece. None of that can be judged by looking at the front.
The practical rule is the same: treat an unknown as the more delicate fibre until testing proves otherwise.
