Why home washing goes wrong
Lined drapes have two fabrics that shrink at different rates. Run them through a household machine and the lining pulls the face fabric out of shape, permanently. Length is the first thing to go, and there is no getting it back.
Cleaned in place where possible
Many drapes can be cleaned hanging, using a low-moisture method that avoids taking down hardware and avoids the shrinkage risk entirely. For heavy or heavily soiled panels, we take them down, clean them properly, and rehang them.
Sun damage is not soil
Fabric that has faded or gone brittle along the leading edge has taken UV damage, and cleaning will not restore it — in fact aggressive cleaning can finish off a weakened panel. We check for this and tell you before proceeding.
Sheers need the gentlest hand
Sheer and voile panels are structurally fragile and yellow with age rather than soil. Some clean up well. Some are simply old. We are straight with you about which you have.
What drapery cleaning costs
Drapes are priced by panel and by length, since a floor-length lined panel holds several times the fabric of a short kitchen curtain. Cleaning in place costs less than taking panels down and rehanging them, and it's the right choice for most lightly soiled drapery.
Lined and interlined panels cost more because there are two or three fabrics to treat and they don't always behave the same way. Sheers are priced lower but carry more risk — aged sheers are fragile, and we'll tell you when a panel is too far gone to survive cleaning.
We quote drapes & curtain cleaning the same way everywhere in the county, whether the job is in Rockville Centre, Mineola or Great Neck. If a nearby service is a better fit for what you are describing, we will say so — water damage restoration is the one people most often turn out to need instead.
How drapery gets ruined
The home washing machine is the main offender. Face fabric and lining shrink at different rates, so panels come out puckered, twisted, and shorter — and length is what you cannot get back. Lined drapes that cost several hundred pounds a panel are regularly destroyed this way in a single wash cycle.
The second failure is cleaning a panel that was already failing. Fabric that has taken years of direct sun goes brittle along the leading edge, and the cleaning that would be routine on a sound panel will finish off a weakened one. That damage was coming regardless, but it should be your decision made in advance rather than a surprise at the end.
Hardware is the overlooked casualty. Panels taken down carelessly bend traverse rods and strip the screws out of brackets that were installed into plaster twenty years ago, and rehanging then becomes a repair job nobody quoted for. We take note of how the hardware is fixed before anything comes down, and if a bracket looks marginal we say so rather than discover it under load.
Between cleanings
Vacuum panels with the upholstery attachment two or three times a year, working from the top down. Drapery collects an enormous amount of airborne dust that never becomes visible because it settles evenly, and removing it regularly extends how long the fabric lasts.
Use a sheer or a blind behind heavy panels if the window gets strong sun. The inner layer takes the UV damage instead of the expensive drapery, and replacing a sheer is a fraction of what replacing lined panels costs.
What happens on the day
Four steps, and you know the price before step three.
Assess the panels
Lining, fibre, and sun damage all get checked. A weakened panel can fail during cleaning and you should know first.
Decide in place or down
Most panels clean hanging. Heavy or heavily soiled ones come down and go back up when they're done.
Low-moisture clean
Gentle enough that the lining and the face fabric don't shrink at different rates and pull the panel out of shape.
Rehang and dress
Back on the hardware and dressed into their folds.

Drapes & Curtain Cleaning questions
Do you take the drapes down?
We can, and we rehang them. Many panels clean well in place.
Will the color fade?
Not from our process. Pre-existing sun fade will be more visible once soil is removed.
Can you clean roman shades and valances?
Yes, usually in place.
Why not just wash them at home?
Lined drapes have two fabrics that shrink at different rates. A household machine pulls them out of shape permanently, and length is the first thing you lose.
My sheers have gone yellow. Will cleaning fix that?
Sometimes. Yellowing from soil comes out; yellowing from age and UV exposure is in the fibre and doesn't. We'll look at them and tell you which you have.
