Leather is skin and it dries out

Finished leather is a hide with a protective coating over it, and beneath that coating the fibre structure depends on oils to stay flexible. Those oils deplete naturally with age, heat and use, and every cleaning removes a further portion of them.

This is why cleaning and conditioning are not two services you can choose between. Cleaning alone leaves the hide drier than it was, and repeated over a few years that produces the cracking you see along seat and arm creases — the places where the leather flexes most.

Finish type decides everything

Pigmented leather has an opaque protective topcoat. It is the most common upholstery leather, the most durable, and the most forgiving to clean because the coating takes the wear rather than the hide.

Semi-aniline has a light coating with some dye showing through. Aniline has essentially no coating — it is dyed through, shows the natural grain, feels wonderful, and absorbs anything spilled on it almost instantly.

The test is simple. Put a small drop of water on a hidden area. On pigmented leather it beads and sits. On aniline it darkens the leather within seconds as it soaks in. That single observation determines what can safely be used.

What ruins leather in ordinary households

Baby wipes are the most common culprit we encounter. Most contain alcohol or surfactants that strip the finish, and on aniline they leave a permanently lightened patch. The damage often is not obvious for a week or two, by which point the connection is not made.

All-purpose household sprays do the same thing faster. Saddle soap, frequently recommended online, is formulated for tack rather than furniture and is too aggressive for most upholstery leather.

Then there is denim transfer — indigo from dark jeans migrating into light-coloured leather over months of ordinary sitting. Caught early it often lifts. Once it has penetrated a semi-aniline hide it may only lighten rather than clear.

What body oil does

The dark patches on headrests and armrests are absorbed body oil rather than surface dirt. This is why wiping them makes no difference — household cleaners push the oil deeper rather than lifting it out.

Removing it requires a product formulated to lift oil out of a finish, applied and worked in a way that brings it to the surface rather than driving it in. It is the most common single request we get on leather furniture and it is entirely fixable if caught before the finish itself has degraded.

The conditioning step

Conditioner restores flexibility to the fibre structure. It does not repair cracks already present, refill a scratch, or restore colour that has worn through — those are repair and recolouring work, which is a different trade.

Frequency depends on exposure. A sofa in a sunny window or near a radiator needs conditioning more often than one in a cool room; every six to twelve months is a reasonable range for most furniture, and annually alongside a clean is a sensible rhythm.

Over-conditioning is possible. Applying heavy product repeatedly leaves a tacky surface that attracts soil, which is the opposite of the intended effect.

Automotive leather is a harder environment

Car seats take direct UV through glass, wide temperature swings, and constant friction from getting in and out. They dry out considerably faster than furniture leather in the same house.

They also carry a specific risk: silicone-based dressings that leave a glossy film. On a steering wheel that is a genuine safety problem rather than a cosmetic one, and on seats it makes the surface slippery and attracts dust. Matte, non-greasy products exist precisely for this.

Practical care between professional visits

Dust with a dry microfibre cloth weekly — dust is mildly abrasive and works into the grain. Keep leather out of direct sun and away from heat sources where the room layout allows, and rotate cushions if it does not.

Blot spills immediately with a dry cloth. On pigmented leather, water alone is usually enough for a fresh spill; on aniline, blot only, because even water can leave a ring as it dries.

Do not use furniture polish, olive oil, or any household oil. They do not absorb the way conditioner does and they leave a residue that goes rancid.

When it is beyond cleaning

Cracking through the finish into the hide, colour worn away to the substrate, and splitting along seams are repair problems. A good repair specialist can do remarkable work on all three, and cleaning first is usually part of the process.

We will tell you when that is what a piece needs rather than selling a clean that will not change the outcome. In the larger homes across Great Neck, Brookville and the North Shore villages we see a lot of high-value leather that has simply never been conditioned, and the earlier that is corrected the better the piece survives.

Buying leather, briefly

If you are choosing leather furniture for a busy household, pigmented is the practical answer. The protective topcoat takes the wear, spills sit on the surface long enough to be blotted, and maintenance is straightforward.

Aniline is beautiful and unforgiving. It develops a patina that many people prefer, and it absorbs everything — water rings, body oil, denim dye. In a house with children or animals it is a commitment rather than a purchase.

Bonded leather is not leather in any meaningful sense. It is ground leather fibre bonded to a backing with polyurethane over the top, and it delaminates over a few years regardless of care. It cannot be conditioned usefully and it cannot be repaired. Knowing that before buying saves disappointment later.
